Germinating cannabis seeds

After buying the cannabis seeds, the next step will be to germinate the seeds. There are several methods of germinating seeds available and with all these methods, warmth, moisture and light are very important. Make sure the room temperature is between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius and that the room is damp and dark. Cannabis seeds sprout fairly quickly. Depending on the type of seeds and the way you’re germinating them, it takes between 12 and 72 hours for them to sprout. Pick up your seeds with a pair of tweezers or make sure your hands are clean. The most popular ways to germinate cannabis seeds are:
– On a moist surface
– In a cup of water
– In soil

On a moist surface

Place your cannabis seeds between two layers of moist material on a plate and make sure this is quite damp. You can use kitchen roll, tissues, cotton wool, and so on; it depends on what you prefer. Check whether the surface is damp enough on a daily basis and make sure it stays damp, but don’t overdo it. After about 48 to 72 hours (this could take more time, a maximum of 6 days) a little white root will appear from the seeds and as soon as this is about 3 mm tall, you should plant the seeds.

In a cup of water

Fill a cup with water and gently put the cannabis seeds in it. After about 3 to 5 days a little white root will appear and as soon as this is about 3 mm tall, you should plant the seeds.

In soil

The good thing about germinating in soil is that you won’t have to move the delicate seeds. Do make sure you’re using specialized soil to germinate your cannabis seeds. You can buy this in growshops. Place the seeds about 1 cm in to the soil. When you plant them too deep, they’ll be exposed to light too soon and when you plant them too deep, they’ll be exposed to light too late and will stay wet, which could cause them to rot. Cover the hole with some soil, but don’t press the soil down too much, because that will make it harder for the seedling to grow upwards. Make sure to keep the soil moist, but again, don’t overdo it. After about 4 to 10 days the seedling will appear from the soil.

In rockwool

You can buy rockwool from a growshop. There’s rockwool plugs, blocks and slabs. Because rockwool’s PH levels are too high (about 8.0), you’ll have to acidify it with water that has a PH level of 5.0 to get the rockwool at the desired PH level of 6.0. When acidifying you’ll also need to add A&B nutrients, which you can also buy from a growshop, because rockwool is a poor medium without nutrients.

In coconut fabric

You can buy coconut fabric from a growshop. Coconut fabric is slightly manured, so technically speaking it’s a good medium. Germinating in coconut fabric isn’t recommended to first time growers, because you’ll need to check the PH and EC levels a lot.

In a seed box

Germinating seeds in a seed box is the ideal way to go for first time growers, because they contain everything you need. Seed boxes are available at specialized growshops. A seed box contains a growing tray, seed plugs and usually a special seed booster. You can just follow the instructions as written in the manual and your seeds will sprout perfectly.
